Colour, Typeface and Shape Theory

Colour theory is the art of using colours and the meanings behind working with colour.
Historically, Sir Isaac Newton in 1706 developed refraction and the colour wheel also known as the hue. He worked with white light which helped him to discover the visible spectrum of light. When researching into Newton and his colour wheel I found out that "He was the first to understand the rainbow".
In 1810, Joham Wolfgang Von Goethe explored the meanings of the colour wheel. Goethe said, "When the eye sees a colour it is immediately exited and it is its nature, spontaneously and of necessity, at one to produce another, which with the original colour, comprehends the whole chromatic scale." The poet created detailed descriptions of shadows, refraction and chromatic aberration. Which gives us a better understanding of how colours can affect us.

When researching Gestalt theory, Gestalt (German for shape/form) by Max WertheimerWolfgang Köhler, and Kurt Koffka looked into how the brain reacts to virtual perception. They came up with different principles we now consider when looking at using a shape in designing. Then I looked into shape theory, this is how a shape portrays itself to us emotionally. For example, a square is formal and strict.

For my colour theory, I am going to use the monochrome effect with a white background(HEX #FFFFFF) with black text(HEX #000000). I am going to change around the leading and the I am going to stay with this basic colour scheme throughout my magazine because I want to create a modern fashion magazine. The white pages will show off being pure and clean. These colours will also attract a certain audience that I am wanting to read my magazine. The white background will also be good for images and the text to stand out from.  However, some pages I will have an image covering the whole page or I may add in a shape with some colour on different pages to liven up my magazine. For example, if I put a circle on a beach beauty page I will fill that circle in with yellow to connotate the sand. As well the circle will represent being happy because when we go to the beach we relax. Throughout my product I will go more in-depth about the colours and shapes I will use, as right now I'm not sure what I will use for each page.

When looking at typography I found out that Bi Sheng invented typography during the eleventh century in China. I found out that 'His movable type system was manufactured from ceramic materials, and clay type printing' and this is how he started with his typography. When looking into typography I found that Serif and sans-serif fonts were popular. The small projections coming off the ends are called "serifs". This type of font normally aims towards a higher class of people. for example, the Daily Telegraph is bought by the upper class.

The font I will use through my magazine is ‘Bodoni 72 Oldstyle. This font is serif. I want to attract the upper and middle class to buy my magazine. When using this font, I am going to keep in mind the leading, tracking and kerning. this is because I want my writing to be readable and legible.
